Ghana first to approve ‘world-changer’ malaria vaccine

Ghana is the first country to approve a new malaria vaccine that has been described as a “world-changer” by the scientists who developed it.

The vaccine – called R21 – appears to be hugely effective, in stark contrast to previous ventures in the same field.

Ghana’s drug regulators have assessed the final trial data on the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness, which is not yet public, and have decided to use it.

The World Health Organization is also considering approving the vaccine.

Malaria kills about 620,000 people each year, most of them young children.

It has been a massive, century-long, scientific undertaking to develop a vaccine that protects the body from the malaria parasite.

Trial data from preliminary studies in Burkina Faso showed the R21 vaccine was up to 80% effective when given as three initial doses, and a booster a year later.

But widespread use of the vaccine hinges on the results of a larger trial involving nearly 5,000 children.

These had been expected to take place at the end of last year, but have still not been formally published. However, they have been shared with some government bodies in Africa, and scientists.

I have not seen the final data, but have been told it shows a similar picture to the earlier studies.

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority, which has seen the data, has approved the vaccine’s use in children aged between five months to three years old.

Other African countries are also studying the data, as is the World Health Organization.

Prof Adrian Hill, director of the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford, where the vaccine was invented, says African countries are declaring: “we’ll decide”, after being left behind in the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines during the pandemic.

He told me: “We expect R21 to make a major impact on malaria mortality in children in the coming years, and in the longer term [it] will contribute to overall final goal of malaria eradication and elimination.”

The Serum Institute of India is preparing to produce between 100-200 million doses per year, with a vaccine factory being constructed in Accra, Ghana.

Each dose of R21 is expected to cost a couple of dollars.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute, said: “Developing a vaccine to greatly impact this huge disease burden has been extraordinarily difficult.”

He added that Ghana, as the first country to approve the vaccine, represents a “significant milestone in our efforts to combat malaria around the world”.

THOSE WHO RELY SOLELY ON THEIR SPIRITUAL FATHERS FOR INTERCESSION INSTEAD OF SEEKING GOD DIRECTLY ARE LAZY – NYARKO ABRONOMMA

According to him, many Christians have put their hopes in anyone at all that is on the pulpit whether the person has truly been called by God or not doesn’t matter to them. He said there is a need to pray as a person.

Speaking in an interview, He said “You can pray and read the word; no need to rely solely on spiritual fathers to pray on your behalf. People pay pastors to pray for them and I feel it’s laziness because you can do all those for yourself as a child of God.”

In Abronomma’s view, the church is steadily becoming a business avenue rather than the House of God or a tabernacle for worship.

That notwithstanding, Abronomma is not disputing the essence of religion, as he believes God still talks and reveals hidden things of his people.

He made the comments when asked if he believes in prophetic declarations.

“I believe in dreams, not necessarily prophesies. If God wants to reveal something about me, he can show it in my dream or someone close to me can also dream about it. I don’t need a pastor to tell me God is real, Jesus and the Holy Spirit is real.”

Nyarko Abronomma admonished Christians to pray for the spirit of discernment to be able to distinguish authenticity from quackery.

Bono East Region: 91 people killed in road accident

Bono East Region: 91 people killed in road accident

Ninety-one people died through 177 road crashes recorded in the Bono East Region in 2022, Mr Emmanuel Parry Acheampong, the Bono East Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority has said.

In 2021, he said 129 people died through 288 road crashes in the region, a reduction of 30 percent in the deaths and 38 percent in the total crashes.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Acheampong said the road accidents injured 383 people in 2021 and 293 people in 2022.

He attributed the reduction in the road crashes partly to the intensified road safety education embarked by the Authority, saying people in the region had now understood issues relating to road safety.

Mr Acheampong said the Authority also upscale outreach activities such as pre-departure checks, school education and radio sensitization programmes, indicating the education was also extended to benefit tricycle and motor riders.

He said the authority required support from all stakeholders to tackle road crashes in a more proactive manner, saying the NRSA alone could not shoulder the responsibility of fighting road crashes.

Cancel Freebies On Free SHS Policy – Head Teacher Advocates

Some head teachers of second-cycle institutions are calling for the scrapping of some freebies accompanying the implementation of the government’s Free Senior High School policy.

They believe that this would ease the pressure on government coffers, which would essentially provide an avenue for government to re-channel funds into the provision of food items.

A head teacher, who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity, indicated that his students are fed without protein and fruits as the school has run out of such items.https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-2461868013811595&output=html&h=300&adk=2611063808&adf=2034898094&pi=t.aa~a.1535770616~i.7~rp.4&daaos=1674550443413&w=360&lmt=1674636499&num_ads=1&rafmt=1&armr=3&sem=mc&pwprc=9561154315&ad_type=text_image&format=360×300&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmyghanamedia.com%2F42600-2cancel-freebies-on-free-shs-policy-head-teacher-advocates%2F&fwr=1&pra=3&rh=264&rw=316&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&sfro=1&wgl=1&fa=27&dt=1674636498781&bpp=20&bdt=8102&idt=-M&shv=r20230119&mjsv=m202301100101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3Db9819a55a2297b26-22462b001adb0037%3AT%3D1673959906%3ART%3D1673959906%3AS%3DALNI_MYH-BAk5ZJP5xo7Zc_8I7RKdAOo8g&gpic=UID%3D00000bc3559dbccf%3AT%3D1673959906%3ART%3D1674635837%3AS%3DALNI_MZwanBN956Dknewgp-C2BTC6o4McQ&prev_fmts=0x0%2C360x300&nras=3&correlator=6663053635582&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=580479411.1673959894&ga_sid=1674636496&ga_hid=1531350908&ga_fc=1&u_tz=0&u_his=1&u_h=640&u_w=360&u_ah=640&u_aw=360&u_cd=32&u_sd=2&adx=0&ady=1242&biw=360&bih=616&scr_x=0&scr_y=586&eid=44759875%2C44759926%2C44759837%2C44777877%2C31071714&oid=2&pvsid=3537783477513195&tmod=2066732429&nvt=3&eae=0&fc=1408&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C360%2C0%2C360%2C616%2C360%2C616&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=128&bc=29&ifi=5&uci=a!5&btvi=1&xpc=MmKY6pGzfd&p=https%3A//myghanamedia.com&dtd=303

He also believes that parents are ready and capable of supporting government to feed the students, and should thus be given the chance.

“Free uniforms should be cancelled, free church service attire, breakfast and supper should be taken care of by parents, not the government. And we keep on drumming this, and I don’t understand this, because parents are capable of taking care of their children”.

“This thing has gone beyond politics. We are talking about Ghana, as we speak, we don’t have a single tin of sardine in my school. I don’t remember the last time we gave them eggs and fruits,” a head teacher of a Senior High School who spoke on Eyewitness News lamented.

The Free SHS policy is a government initiative introduced in September 2017 by the Nana Akufo-Addo government to provide free education for senior high school students.

Several calls by civil society organisations and watchers of the education space for the review of the policy have been rejected by the government despite glaring challenges plaguing the programme.
